Bedford Road Trip

This past week, I took on a new challenge: traveling solo with my two young children while pregnant! I am so very glad I took on this challenge and I now know that I can do it!
While, my hard-working husband flew to Boston for work, we drove down to Bedford. It's about 4 hours south of here.
We only had to stop once...mainly because of a cramp I had in my right side that lasted for about an hour. This cramp has been my er...companion(?)...throughout this pregnancy which leads me to believe it may be the baby laying on a nerve. The cramp causes tingling and pain in the front of my leg as well.
Anyway, after an hour of this and holding my belly up to attempt to get the cramping to stop, I finally stopped at a Harris Teeter around Charlottesville.
I took the kids in and we all had a potty break. Of course, while I was pottying, my children took it upon themselves to pull a plethora of toilet paper from the roll and then disperse it into the little trashboxes that are in most stalls these days. There were two in mine b/c we were in the handicapped bathroom. So those boxes were thoroughly filled.
After the bathroom break, we played with some toys in the store and I bought a couple of things I needed. Then we went to the entryway of the store and my children pretended to ride the green dinosaur that seems to be at every Harris Teeter. They only take quarters and of course, I was all out.
We did that for a few minutes and then I had to tear FJ away from it and head back to the car.
The rest of the drive was quick and peaceful and I had no more cramping thankfully.

We got to MaryBeth's house around 4:00. MaryBeth and I have been friends since 1992! We met  at church the summer before we began high school.
She was in my wedding...she's the last bridesmaid on the end-

She was also at my first baby shower-

And I was in her wedding and that was the last time we had seen each other until this trip-
We took this cute pic of her holding Miss A at her wedding. Miss A was about 4 1/2 months old-

When we saw each other this time, it was like no time had passed at all!! We chatted for hours during the kids' nap/rest time and after they went to bed at night.
She was so helpful with my kiddos too. She knew just what to do and how to help and didn't ask any questions. She had such intuition which means she is going to be a FABULOUS mom come January!

She helped get my kids into the car and buckled in and took them out when we got to places. She found high chairs at restaurants and got FJ settled in and helped them get dry and clothed after the bath at night. She played with them and read to them and held them and she never tired of Miss A's hourly question of "what's scary about this princess movie?"
She's just wonderful!

MB's house is on a mountain and has the most beautiful scenery. I loved being there and thought about how wonderful it must be to live at a "getaway!
There was plenty to do and my kids were happily content doing so many nature-type activities.
As soon as we got there, we went out back to pick blackberries that grow along their house-
MB picked most of them and Miss A saved most of hers-

FJ ate most of his as evidenced by the drool on his chin-

Playing with Chloe afterwards-
Chloe became the daily free entertainment and she was asked for every morning by my kiddos especially FJ.
MB showed us a couple of local playgrounds. The first day we met up with a friend of hers and her daughter and baby boy. It was quite hot that day and there wasn't any shade but my children had fun and it wore them out enough to take a nice nap!

After naps, we went and fed the fish in their pond behind their house-
First Chloe scared away some deer...do you see the two small glowing eyes in the woods?

Throwing out the food for the fish-

Taking a pic in front of the beautiful flowers that Billy, MaryBeth's husband, planted in their front yard. Billy owns and runs a plant nursery so he has quite the green thumb!
FJ walking up the path next to the hounds' pen-
 Miss A by the pond-
A picture of the back of their log cabin and the pond-
Chloe getting ready to go into the pond to catch a stick-
Chloe swimming in the pond...look closely for her head-
 FJ scoping out the pond-
Evening entertainment-
FJ liked this racoon that played the theme song from a Benny Hill show-
Miss A liked grooming Chloe and covering her up with this beach towel. Chloe was very patient with everything that Miss A wanted to do-
The next day we went and picked grapes at Billy's plant nursery. Miss A and FJ tired quickly of this activity but Billy and MaryBeth kept it up and picked enough to make about 15 jars of grape jelly that evening.
I was trying to get a photo of MB picking grapes but my setting on my camera was turned to something different and it focused on the branches instead-
The pots were pretty full at this point...Miss A kept asking which one is mine?

FJ eating fresh concord grapes from the vine-
 Taking a walk with Chloe-

MaryBeth instructing them on how to pick-
After the grape picking, we walked around the nursery for a bit. Billy is currently growing tons and tons of Mums-

After the nursery and grape-picking, we headed to a much more shaded park at MB's church. It was also gated and had equipment that was a little lower to the ground not to mention a bench for MB and I to sit on and rest-

After the park, we went to eat lunch at a cute cafe in downtown Bedford and then headed home for naps.
For some entertainment post-naps, we went out on their back porch and blew some bubbles-

Billy made some grape jelly that night and we got to bring home 2 delicious jars!

I tried to take a pic of FJ in our guestroom that will soon be their baby's room but he wasn't having any of it...Miss A really liked the princess lamp on the nightstand though-

We took some goodbye pictures before we left on Saturday-

Thank you, MaryBeth, for letting us invade your home for a few days. Thank you for all the help and for showing us around Bedford! We loved our trip and spending time with you, Billy and Chloe!! Love you!

3 and a Half!

Miss A turned 3 1/2 on the 25th!!
When I asked to take her 3 1/2 year old picture on her half-birthday, she insisted that I take pictures of her in her Ariel dress in different places in our living room-

She weighs 31 pounds and is 38 inches tall.
Her head is 51 cm around which isn't much bigger than FJ's.
One of her favorite topics is what's scary in all the princess movies. I think she wants to know what movie she can watch and not be scared and I think I figured out the least scary might be Cinderella.
She is so sweet when she first wakes up in the mornings. She often comes up to me and greets me in a whispery voice-Good morning, Mommy-and she usually gives me a kiss.
When I tell her good night and I love you, she will usually say "I love you too".
She loves to hold hands with friends.
She likes to hug her brother.
She still wants to be held...especially when she is tired of walking...and she gets tired from walking very quickly.
Playing with playdough, painting, and dressing up are all favorite activities for her among other things.
Watching TV is still a top fave and I often have to cut off the supply b/c she would be happy to watch TV for hours.
Thankfully, she also enjoys being read to and enjoys looking at books! She gets 2-3 stories before nap and 2 stories and a Bible story before bed at night.
She doesn't always nap.
She only naps when she's gotten up really early that morning or if she's been outside for a couple of hours that morning.
That means she only naps about 2-4 days a week and usually not on weekends at all because Daddy is here! (She surely can't miss out on whatever Daddy is doing.)
She asks to pray before meals and will thank God for random things that make us smile.
She warms up pretty quickly to new people and smiles and laughs easily. This is fun for us considering how serious she was for the first year or two of her life.
Singing a song before bed is a must and she either requests a certain song or she asks that we make up  a song about whatever topic she fancies that day.
She talks about the new baby and for a while, she wanted it to be a girl and that we give the baby her name so there would be two in the house.
But now, she says it can be a boy and we can give the baby daddy's name.
She likes to pretend she is a baby and will pretend cry and wants us to hold her.
She asks to do "Eskimo kisses".
I think she's beautiful and I know that's ingrained in us to think our own children are beautiful. I  also know and think other children are also beautiful but I can't help but think she is gorgeous when I look at her blue eyes, tan skin, cute cheeks, and curly hair.
So, here we are 6 months away from her 3rd birthday and 6 months till her 4th birthday. 4 sounds so big! It's a good thing we have 6 months to go!
